What is Tempura?
Tempura is a Japanese dish that Americans are getting more and more familiar with. It’s usually made up of seafood or vegetables, battered in tempura batter and then fried. This can be served as an appetizer, main course, or even dessert! The word “tempura” comes from the Portuguese word for “deep fry.” This is why it’s sometimes called “Japanese deep-fried food.” One of the most popular tempura dishes is shrimp tempura which consists of shrimp dipped in flour mixed with egg white and panko breadcrumbs before being deep-fried until crispy.
Today, we used a sweet potato, as the base, and they were absulutely delicous!
Pro Tips:
To make sure the sweet potato rounds cook quickly and evenly, be sure to slice them thinly. The thinner they are cut the quicker it will be for all pieces of that particular vegetable dish or side dish recipe!
Tempura will air-fry better if you dry them slightly with a paper towel. This way, the batter will adhere to the sweet potatoes.
For real crunchy and crispy Sweet Potato Tempura, spray the coating of the tempura with cooking spray. This will help them crunch up.
This recipe will work with any Air Fryer Basket or Oven model, the cooking time will vary slightly.
If you are using an Air Fryer Oven, place the tray on the very bottom, so that both the inside and outside will get cooked at the same time.

Tempura is a Japanese dish usually consisting of vegetables, seafood, or other ingredients dipped in batter and deep-fried. The first step to storing tempura correctly is by ensuring that sweet potato has cooled down completely before storing them in an airtight container like Tupperware or a Ziploc bag.
