Air Fryer Strawberry Scones — I have a sweet tooth, and I love to bake. This morning, I tried my hand at making scones with an air fryer! They turned out so delicious that I wanted to share the recipe with you too. It’s quick and easy- just what we need on our busy mornings.
Today’s recipe is for air fryer strawberry scones. I developed the recipe, a food blogger who loves to create delicious recipes that are easy to follow and understand.
This is the perfect time of year for fresh strawberries, so it’s only natural they would find their way into one of my favorite pastries: scones.
These delicious treats are drizzled with powdered sugar icing and have just enough sugar in them to give them a little extra flavor without being overpowering. You can also make these with whole wheat flour for a healthier version. And, of course, you can easily switch out the ingredients to be Gluten-Free!
What Are Scones?
What are scones? Scones are a popular type of quick bread that originated in Scotland. They’re traditionally made by baking flour, butter, sugar, and milk together, then adding eggs to form the dough.
The dough is shaped into rounds or triangular wedges and baked until golden brown on the outside with a moist interior. These little treats can be served as breakfast if you like with jam or honey; they also make great desserts when topped with ice cream, for instance!
Pro Tips:
- Scone will be deep golden brown on top, but it is essential to make sure the bottom of the scone is cooked through. If needed, cut through the scone on the scored wedge sections, separate slightly, and continue cooking in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes longer until the scone is cooked in the center.
- Make sure your scones are not too thick – be sure they are no more than ¾” wide.
- The air fryer does not need to be pre-heated; you may need to adjust cook time depending on the wattage of the air fryer.
- The buttermilk adds a fantastic depth of flavor and moisture to these scones. You can also use milk.
- They are crispy and slightly flakey on the top of the air fryer and dense and moist on the inside.
- The strawberries add quite a bit of moisture; ½ cup chopped strawberries is the maximum amount you can add to the recipe. Rinse and allow strawberries to dry before cutting; remove excess moisture or juice before adding to the scone dough.
- You can also use a scone pan. I have used several over the years, and this is one of my favorites.
- It is unnecessary to use parchment paper under the scone, even though this makes transferring into and out of the air fryer easier. Because the scone is thick, the swirling air underneath helps the scone cook more evenly. If you use parchment paper, you will likely need to cook the scone 3-4 minutes longer.
- You can also drop the scone dough in scoops to make individual round scones.
Are Scones Hard to Make?
Scones are a type of sweet, dense bread that is typically served with jam. They can be made at home or bought from bakeries and supermarkets. Making scones at home isn’t hard, but it does require some time and patience.
Scones are not difficult to make, and they cook up beautifully in the air fryer.
Fresh Or Frozen Strawberries
You can use either fresh or frozen strawberries for this recipe. If you use frozen strawberries, you should not defrost them as they will become too watery. You can also use dried strawberries for this recipe.
How to Store
Store in an airtight container for 2-3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
You can either freezer before or after air frying. If you freeze the dough, cut them into wedges. Place the scone wedges (uncooked) onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, and freeze until frozen solid. Then remove them and wrap them tightly in saran wrap before adding them to a freezer bag.
If you freeze them after baking, for best results, do not add the glaze. You will defrost, make a fresh batch of glaze, and pour it on top.
How To Air Fry Frozen Scones
Follow the recipe below, but you will need to add a few minutes of cooking time. I would recommend air frying at 350 degrees F, air fryer setting, for 15 to 20 minutes.
Check on the scones as they bake up.
