Instructions

STEP 1: Prepare the Cabbage Leaves

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
  3. Place the whole cabbage into boiling water and peel off leaves as they soften (about 2–3 minutes each).
  4. Set softened leaves aside to cool.

STEP 2: Make the Filling

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, egg, minced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika.
  2. Mix until evenly combined — do not overmix.

STEP 3: Roll the Cabbage

  1. Trim the thick stem area from each cabbage leaf to make rolling easier.
  2. Place 2–3 tablespoons of filling in the center of each leaf.
  3. Fold the sides inward and roll tightly like a burrito.

STEP 4: Make the Tomato Sauce

  1. In a bowl, mix together tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

STEP 5: Assemble & Bake

  1. Spread a layer of tomato sauce onto the bottom of a baking dish.
  2. Place cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish.
  3. Pour remaining sauce over the rolls.
  4. Cover tightly with foil.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 75 minutes, until tender and fully cooked.
