Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until well combined. Shape into patties.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the beef patties on both sides, then transfer to a baking dish.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms until tender. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir to coat.
  5. Gradually stir in beef broth and thyme. Cook until the gravy thickens.
  6. Pour the mushroom gravy over the beef patties in the baking dish.
  7. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top of the steak and gravy.
  8. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the mashed potatoes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  10. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Chef’s Tips

  • Use Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes for the creamiest mashed topping.
  • For additional flavor, sauté onions with mushrooms before making the gravy.
  • If you like extra crust, top the casserole with more cheese before baking.
