Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Add the yeast and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add the melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the flour until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the top of the loaf with the beaten egg if desired.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Chef’s Tips
- Use a thermometer to check the water temperature to ensure it’s not too hot for the yeast.
- Kneading the dough well is crucial for the bread’s texture, so don’t skip this step.
- For a softer crust, cover the loaf with a clean kitchen towel while cooling.
